Oxridge Third Graders (Mrs. Coupe's Class)Donate $187 in coins to Selleck's Woods. Friends of Selleck’s Woods president Chris Filmer, received a happy surprise on Friday June 12 when Laura Coupe delivered a heavy bucket on behalf of her class. Weighing 20 pounds, it contained only coins, with a label reading Pennies and Nickels for Selleck’s Woods and totaled $187. Each student had made their own contribution
It was a gift , a spontaneous act of generosity initiated by the class itself for the purpose of preserving and protecting Selleck’s Woods Nature Preserve. Mr Filmer, who had previously spoken to the class on another subject- "Projects, History and Heros" commented: "Mrs. Coupe’s third graders are a extraordinarily bright and self motivated group. They are a delight to teach: intelligent, attentive, questioning, polite and very talented. What they have just done is a demonstration of how a small group of young people (all under 10 years) can band together, with a purpose and make a significant contribution. We are in the midst of our annual fundraiser, and theirs is one of our biggest donations. My wife Sandy and I counted all 2468 coins of which 1350 were pennies. What a wonderful gesture from a caring class! It is much appreciated by The Friends of Selleck’s Woods and all the animals of the woods. One of our projects is to improve the habitat for birds around the lake, including two woodduck boxes. I think the class would be happy if their money was spent on that. If I could speak to the class now I would say "Thank you ALL very much, not only for your beautiful "Thank You" cards but for this most valuable gift -- you are truly a great class and a shining example to many, young and old.""
